Regular use of the jewellery or its improper storage can lead to the accumulation of dirt in your jewellery or even scratches on its surface. Therefore, it is important that you know the cleaning procedure of each of your lovely pieces and if not, get your jewellery cleaned by professionals at least once a year. This shall also serve as an opportunity to have it checked closely for any loosened stones, broken or disintegrating prongs etc.
We have put together a basic cleaning and maintenance guide for you to clean and maintain different metals and gemstone jewellery at home.

Cleaning
To keep your platinum, gold, diamonds and gemstones shining nice and bright wash these regularly. Mix a drop or 2 of the dishwashing liquids with warm water in a bowl. Immerse your jewellery pieces to be cleaned in this solution. Now take a brush with very soft bristles and clean the piece gently. Do not brush too hard as this can affect the finish of the metal. Now dip this piece in a bowl of clean warm water and then pat dry and polish with a lint free cloth.
We would like to add a word of caution here; the above method does not apply to all the gemstones. Certain precious stones like the emerald, peridot, coral, lapis lazuli, opal, turquoise, amber, tanzanite can just be wiped clean with a damp lint free cloth.
Always clean and polish your pearls with a damp lint free cloth. Do not use any kind of detergents, solvents or cleaning chemicals to clean pearls. These are much delicate than the precious stones and metals.

To keep your Silver jewellery tarnish free always its best to wear it more often. Body’s natural oils help in keeping the silver jewellery tarnish free for a longer time. Though most of the silver these days is rhodium polished, we still recommend to use special silver cleaning solutions available in jewellery stores for safe cleaning of silver. Also keep moisture at bay from your silver jewellery as it speeds tarnishing and darkening of silver.
Never use abrasive, strong chemicals to clean your jewellery, this can affect the lifetime and finish of the pieces.
Ultrasonic cleaning procedure, which uses high intensity sound waves to clean off the surface of the jewellery, should be availed cautiously. This has been found to have loosened the stones from the setting.

Storage
It is highly recommended to keep your jewellery in the box, pouch or packing that it came in from the jeweller. We understand that this can take up a lot of space, so here are some other viable options for you. Keep each piece of your jewellery wrapped in tissue or thin cotton cloth and store it in boxes. You may also use different compartments of your jewellery box to store each piece separately.
Always store your jewellery in lined boxes or containers as this shall help in minimizing scratches and ensure the shine of the metal.

Maintenance
Make it a habit to keep jewellery as the last thing to wear, when dressing up. This habit shall save you from any kind of dirt or chemical accumulation on your prized pieces.
Make-up, heat treatments on hair, hair sprays, perfume sprays etc. can gradually damage the metal as well as the gemstone’s surface.
Likewise, remove your diamond rings and bracelets while cleaning without protective gloves. The abrasive chemicals in the cleaning solutions can affect the shine of your diamonds.
