Is Birthstone engagement ring a Yes or a No?

Know before you decide on picking a birthstone engagement ring, it might not last that long!

An Engagement ring is always extremely special and treasured. It is an ode to your beloved and could be bought in accordance with the personality, taste and preferences of the wearer. Many a times, we at Sparkling Stones, have received requests from our patrons for engagement rings in their beloved’s birthstone. This is because they would like to put together elements from their partner’s personality in their bespoke engagement ring and thus the birthstone as the centre stone.

We think it’s a great idea to make birthstone the centre stone of the engagement ring, but it is not a practical idea. It’s a definite ‘yes’ for people born in April, July, September and December. They can have their birthstones on their engagement rings. It is so because these birthstones namely, diamond, ruby, sapphire and blue topaz have a better durability and strength than other birthstones like emerald, citrine, opal or pearls etc. The hardness of a gemstone is measured on ‘Moh’s scale’. It is denoted on a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being highly brittle and 10 being the hardest. Diamond is a full 10 on the Moh’s scale being the hardest substance on Earth.

Engagement rings are generally worn on a daily basis and are bound to come in contact with soap, dust, pollution and such regular wear and tear. Therefore, it is always advisable to pick a hard gemstone that can withstand the test of time and keep its shape and sheen intact. Gemstones that score more than 7.5 or 8 on the Moh’s scale are considered fit enough for engagement rings. This is the reason why one might find diamond, ruby and sapphires as the most common stones in engagement rings. Besides these three, Aquamarine for March born, Alexandrite for June born, Spinel for those born in August and Topaz for November born are the stones that can be considered if you are keen on getting a birthstone engagement ring. These stones score above 7.5 on the Moh’s scale and can add colour to the engagement ring, a change from the regular diamond engagement rings.

Still if you are keen, what better occasion than your beloved’s birthday or anniversary to gift them a ring with their birthstone. Occasions like child birth, wedding anniversary or holidays can also be apt to gift a birthstone ring, because there is no such thing as ‘too many rings’. One can always layer or wear multiple rings together.
